The STOP Obesity Alliance signed on to support a resolution introduced by House Representatives Marcia L. Fudge (D-OH), Kay Granger (R-TX) and more than 30 other Representatives, to designate September as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.  The Alliance joined other organizations, including several Alliance Steering Committee and Associate Members, to help aggressively reduce obesity, raise awareness for health, wellness and prevention, and improve health care costs.

“Young children are now being diagnosed with weight-related chronic conditions that previously only affected adults,” said STOP Obesity Alliance Director Christine Ferguson, J.D.  “Helping children and their parents prevent and overcome obesity must become a national priority, and we applaud Reps. Fudge, Granger and others for leading this effort.”

The resolution was publicly introduced in December 2009 alongside the NFL, NFL Players Association and the foundation of Washington Redskins’ player, London Fletcher, at the ESPN Zone in Washington, D.C.  The Alliance Steering Committee and Associate Members also supporting the resolution include the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, the American Medical Group Association, the American Sleep Apnea Association, the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Campaign to End Obesity, the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, the Obesity Action Coalition, the Obesity Society, and the Partnership for Prevention.
